Last of Hong Kong

For the last few days in Hong Kong Justin and I did the touristy bits of visiting the giant Buddha and Po Lin Monitory, Victoria Peak which was hugely busy we did the walk around the top of the peak which was fun as the view was always different though walking in the heat makes the 3km feel twice as long. We bumped into Raph at the station with out planning it, and when of to Soho where we found the best Mexican restaurant with not just tacos.

Lawrence, Raph, Justin and I also checked out the Pandas at Ocean Park the music played all day was very tecno as Simon had told us about the Chinese loving it. We found an amusing you are here sign as it pointed out that we where on the cable tram when we where sitting inside it admiring the view. Lawrence also experienced his first real rollercoaster ride. It was amusing to see all the Hong Kong people shielding their skin from the sun using umbrellas I had never seen so many in the one place before.  Visiting Disneyland was heaps of fun as I had never been to one, there where also heaps of theatre performances which we visited. It was funny seeing all the characters played by Chinese people as the cartoons look very different.

Day 7

As KL airport is used often as a stop over on international flights we had to carry our luggage through the x-ray machines and walk through the metal detectors twice once while passing through the customs then before boarding the plane. As it’s a giant airport they have trains to get to the right gate across the airport very modern, unlike a crowed and slow bus. Exiting Hong Kong airport we had to walk through heat sensors getting our body scanned. Our hotel is on the beach so we have a great view across the water and we decided to stay off the central island so we have s ferry ride across. We shared our cab with an American Lady from the Airport who is planning on moving to Hong Kong for work.

After purchasing an octopus card the solution to all public transport on Hong Kong and conveniently can be used in 7eleven where I am buying my constant supply of bottled water. That is one thing I miss is tapped water from Home which is practically free. It’s such a hassle to carry huge bottles too but they overcharge you in most places. We had met with Raph and Lawrence at the Science Museum just like science works, then we checked out some markets. There was a giant one three stories high and so hot inside on the first level meat just hung from the roof and butchers cut them up. Other shop keepers where degutting fish peeling and washing vegetables on the third level it was pre cooked meals like a cafeteria.

I have also noticed the amount of air pollution varying from day to day along with the huge amount of rubbish in the water on the ferries across to HK Central. Plastic bags empty bottles, shoes and heaps of polystyrene foam.

After spending an hour trying meeting up with Raph and Lawrence at the train station we discovered that there are two stations almost together Hong Kong station and Central Station. We had found the lettered entry exist point we needed but in the wrong location. We went out to have lunch at the famous Jumbo floating restaurant. We discovered the importance of reading up on transportation to our location when Raph refused to pay for use of a boat of an elderly lady constantly harassing us and following us, as we found the free boat docking up.

Sharing food together was something I was really enjoying, and Lawrence new what was good as many of the food we had never tried. There where also stories surrounding some of the food like rice wrapped in a lotus leaf to feed the dish so they wouldn’t eat the body of a gentleman drowned in the river.

Some of the shopping was very claustrophobic for me with the computer market proving to be a struggle full of little shops swamped by many people along with now windows and a maze of shops to navigate to get out. We also found the best way to keep dry and see Hong Kong was to take a ride on the double story trams, which where very skinny compared to ours.

Petronas Twin Towers

I found it really difficult yesterday after talking to Mum as it was her Birthday and I wasn’t there. Its a lot harder being apart from my family even though its only been a few days you just feel guilty not being there when they are all together. Also I have been having some weird dreams about giant spiders attacking me in the middle of the night to find myself curled up at the end of the bed, its hard to sleep normally in hot weather. I visited the butterfly park and the worlds largest bird park, we found out why so many peugeot cars in KL as they manufacture them in Malaysia. ( I am only just discovering about the many car designs) We toured around the city on the monorail which wasn’t as High up as I thought it would be. As the Petronas Twin Tower is something which every tourist has a look at (Mainly because its free) we had to stand in the longest cue to get a ticket at the one of the last viewing time which was 4.45p. So I went to Aqaura a giant aquarium that sat in the basement of the building and got my first student discount yay! Inside the Giant fish tank amongst all the sharks where more Malaysian flags. On the bridge between the two towers one of the tour guides asked me if I was a movie star as I looked like one which was very surprising as I had never expected that or been told that before. I am not enjoying the backpacking accommodation so much as I hate not having my own bathroom, the room is fine though. Our Indian friend at our favourite restaurant said at least the place had no bed bugs unlike the other one further done the street so its pretty good in that out look. Our last tourist thing in KL is to visit the KL tower. Will be off to Hong Kong tomorrow with an early flight out, though I have decide I really like holidays overseas travelling as every thing is new!

The start of my travels

With my new passport all blank and empty I am looking forward to filling it up, the only thing which sits inside is my China Visa awaiting for my arrival into Foshan. I have left all my family behind back at Melbourne airport waving goodbye with the feeling of half excitement and half terror at what could be waiting ahead. My first visit is to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. I have never seen so many flags of one country shown off as most have them all over their apartment buildings celebrating their 50 years of independence. Facing a long day ahead as our plane left Melbourne at 12.15am, and after 8 hours in a plane with screaming kids I was not at my best. After leaving Melbourne’s winter behind and hitting the hot humidity of Malaysia my body doesn’t know what has happened. Though travelling with Justin means I can lug a lot of heavy stuff onto him, and as my room at the backpacker joint isn’t ready till later I have my laptop the one item that I really need to study in China.

The roads are really crazy here with taxis just ramming their car into the smallest gaps in the traffic, walking along the foot path so far seems the safest way to travel. Decided to do the cultural thing and look at some Malaysian architecture, and the old homes they used to live in. Though with the religion allowing multiple wives the houses where larger to accomidate the children compared to other homes.

China

Well today Raph, Lawrence, James and I went off to the Chinese consulate in Toorak to get our visas. It feels so real now have cashed in the check and looking at flight s off to Hong Kong. Its so scary and exciting at the same time as if I stuff up might not end up in China, or will end up running out of money. I have no idea what I am doing and am glad I have people to remind me what I need to do.

Class

Eco-sense is a lot more work and challenging than I first thought, I can already feel that I am going to be kept pretty busy, and it seems there is a lot of hunting and finding things and to be kept up to date with what’s out there. I have no idea how my first project went I know it could have been heaps better as soon as I pinned it up and looked at the others. Upper pool is defiantly a head spinner.  CAiD as usual is holding all problems and learning another program is a struggle and I defiantly didn’t pick it to get good marks but to learn so as long I can do that I am happy. Sustainability in studies is very fun and not stressful as of yet I am loving the class I picked but still wish I could be in Soumitri’s as well, as I am such a bad consumer myself I feel so hypocritical at times.
